Motorsports are an expensive, addicting habit

It’s no surprise to those who know me that I am a car freak. Something about the vehicle being “alive” draws me to it. It isn’t only cars, honestly, anything with an engine intrigues me.

To date, I have owned 24 vehicles and 3 motorcycles. On average I would always have 2 vehicles. No, I am not bragging. 40% of the time the 2nd vehicle was either broken or a parts car haha. The funny thing is I just can’t seem to get away from it.

Now living in Houston with my family, I figured I could really focus on work. Building my dreams and being able to get where I have always wanted to go. Thing is, I am stuck in the same habit/trap of the motorsport game.

I currently drive a 2004 Lexus GX470, essentially it is a big flashy 4runner. It has an alarming 218,000 miles currently and makes all kinds of clanks and rattles. The vehicle has given me issues twice in the last 4 weeks (we have been here for 8.)

I can’t get rid of her

I probably could, but when I look at replacement vehicles nothing “sensible” comes to mind. At this time in my life, I or we need something smart, reliable, and safe. My car searches involve 4×4 off road vehicles or something manual transmission with the keyword “turbo” involved.

Is growing up required?

I’ve played with the thought of possibly leasing something somewhat “fun” and building something on the side. Thing is, we live in an apartment complex and funds are tight with the wedding coming round.

I find myself searching through articles such as Jalopnik or Speed Hunters looking for the “family sensible” vehicles in these non-existent places. Either way, I am fighting with the internal struggle of growing up.

Let’s see what the future holds.
